Course Description
A Geriatric Care Nurse specializes in caring for older adults, with a focus on supporting the management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders. They assist with the development and implementation of individualized care plans and provide education, guidance, and counselling to elderly patients and their families, particularly when managing acute and chronic health conditions.
Geriatric care nurses are trained to understand and address the often complex physical, mental, emotional, and social needs of older adults. They help patients maintain their health, manage existing conditions, and cope with changes in their physical and mental abilities. Their goal is to promote independence, dignity, mobility, and a good quality of life, enabling older adults to remain as active and independent as possible.
Geriatric care nurses must have a genuine interest in working with older adults. They should be patient, compassionate, attentive, and excellent listeners, while demonstrating respect for the individual needs, preferences, and dignity of each patient.
