Course Description


A Geriatric nurse cares for the elderly, focusing on the development and implementation of treatment plans for chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disorders. They also educate and counsel families of elderly patients who suffer from acute and chronic conditions.

Geriatric nurses are educated to understand and treat the often complex physical and mental health needs of older people. They try to help their patients protect their health and cope with changes in their mental and physical abilities, so older people can stay independent and active as long as possible.

Geriatric nurses must enjoy working with older people. They must be patient, listen extremely carefully and balance the needs of their patients with sometimes conflicting demands from family members.

As a geriatric nurse, you will be required to perform a number of duties. For example, you will often be responsible for:

  • Measuring and recording vital signs
  • Administering medications
  • Exercising and massaging patients
  • Watching for signs of pressure ulcer
  • Transporting patients to doctor’s visits and other appointments
  • Helping patients with their daily needs, such as bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom
