Course Description
Practical nurses support patients by providing basic nursing and medical care under the supervision of a medical doctor, registered nurse (RN), or head nurse. Due to the nature of patient care, practical nurses perform a variety of duties depending on their place of employment and the needs of their patients.
Some of the duties of a practical nurse may include:
- Performing basic wound care and changing dressings as directed.
- Assisting with mobility, positioning, transferring, and ambulation of patients.
- Monitoring and recording patients’ vital signs.
- Maintaining accurate and timely patient records and documentation.
- Performing immunizations and other injections
- Working collaboratively with registered nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team to provide safe and effective patient care.
- Evaluating patient care and tending to the emotional and psychological needs of patients
- Speaking to patient families regarding care, especially in home health care settings
- Supporting patients through difficult treatments and diagnoses
- Preparing patients for medical exams and surgical procedures
- Educating patients on surgical aftercare, medical treatment, symptoms and side effects
- Assisting patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding.

As a practical nurse, you can work in many different settings, including; hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, specialty clinics, therapy centers and surgical centers, home health care settings, infirmaries etc…
